Report from Poverty in Luxembourg – Illusion or Reality

In mid-March 123Go Social, Caritas, The Idea Monopoly and The Impactory collaborated to produce a conference on the simple yet important theme: Poverty in Luxembourg – illusion or reality?

Some 60 attendants spent the day exploring this in two main sessions. In the morning a more traditional lecturing format, we heard from Mme Chillon from the Department for Solidarity Economy at the Ministry of Economy, Mme Georges and M. Schmit from Caritas sharing data and real life stories they meet in their work with people in poverty or the risk zone of poverty her in Luxembourg (see the graph below for the details on numbers around poverty in Luxembourg).

The afternoon session set things in motion and changed tempo drastically. First all participants received a crash course in the Business Model Canvas from Sophie Raquez from The Idea Monopoly. This was then used as the framework to pick up the ideas that had been submitted throughout the morning by participants. A quick vote and prioritisation produced seven poverty problems or challenges, that the self-organised groups attacked and tried to find a solution to. It was intense and tough work since it’s not that many who have the experience from looking at entrepreneurial and self-sustainable solutions to solve poverty problems.

Overall the groups did well above their own expectations. The final pitches done by the groups using the the Business Model Canvas as the framework were very inspiring. During this segment there were also some external visitors. Some came as coaches to do speed coaching for the teams participating in the 123GO Social business plan competition which was the last thing that took place before a well deserved evening snack and drinks.

An idea is nice but you don’t know how to transform it into a company? Well, now you can do it, and we will help you learn how!

What is the contest about?

We are organizing a start-up contest for university students. Everyone is welcome, from the first bachelor semester to the PhD level. All you need is to have an idea you like and believe in.

What is in it for you?

You will learn how to go from an idea to a viable entrepreneurial project.
You will be trained in tools of business modeling and planning, for free!
You will learn how to prepare and present convincing start-up pitches.
You will meet and network with entrepreneurs from Luxembourg and fellow students interested in entrepreneurship.
You get an outstanding reference for your CV

How to participate

No worries, we will teach you the tools you need to fully describe and design your start-up.

It will take you between 10 and 30 hours work to get from the idea stage to a business model, depending on your experience.

Form a team of 1 to up to 3 people
Apply with a concise and convincing description of your idea (anything between 200 and 1000 words) and the list of team members names and study program. Try to be as clear as possible.

CycleLuxembourg.lu – get involved!

Kasia, of of our members is launching a new community website about cycling in Luxembourg this April 2013, CycleLuxembourg.lu, and she is looking for writers!

You are invited to a meeting at The Impactory on April 15th and meet others, find out how you can get involved, help brainstorm ideas, or just learn more about the project!

What is it?

A community blog about city cycling and recreational cycling with multiple writers, posting on all types of subjects, targeting all different groups. An all-in-one resource with links to everything to do with cycling in Luxembourg, advice, event calendar of all cycling-related events in the region, plus the organisation of new events! Posts can be written in any language but should also be translated to English.
