It was standing room only on Wednesday, the 26th of March for the Girls in Tech launching event held at The Impactory. More than seventy people attended and took part in the evening seminar. The Girls in Tech founding team, made up of Kasia Kolodziejczyk, Marina Thiriet, Marie-Adelaide Gervis, Laurence Bianchini, Adina Pasa Annabelle Buffart were all in attendance. Impactory member, Kasia, from GenCreo, and Thicket, The Impactory Community Project Manager, helped to organize the event.
In the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry there is a visible gender disparity with men composing a majority of the work force. Girls in Tech is a worldwide organization whose goal is to empower women in the ICT field. The Luxembourg chapter aims to help women develop careers in ICT, startup, and digital tech entrepreneurship.
At the Luxembourg launch event, the six founding members shared their story and explained why they decided to start Girls in Tech Luxembourg. With an estimated 900,000 new jobs to be created in the ICT industry over the next two years, women’s education is vital to narrowing the gender gap.
Virginie Simon was the evening’s guest speaker. Simon is a scientist and founder of MyScienceWork, a startup based in Luxembourg. She talked about the difficulties she faced as a female student in engineering school and throughout her career. She encouraged all the participants to face every challenge with determination and ambition, which she attributes to her success.

Support for GIT Luxembourg has been overwhelming. Following the launch there have been messages of support from women and organizations as well as request for support. The Luxembourg press has taken notice with coverage in the Wort, l’Essentiel, le Journal, Itnation, Itone, Paperjam, Delano, and also an interview on radio 103.7.
GIT Luxembourg is passionate about empowering women, and it is currently planning several events to encourage, educate, and support women in tech.

I am sure you have heard about EU Code Week at The Impactory by now, and also the Coding classes for Women project.
As a proud Ambassador to Eu Code Week in Luxembourg and I nearly total beginner (we had a first workshop on HTML & CSS in October) I could not resist sharing my experience learning coding:

Of course the experience was just excellent. Nine girls from diverse background (IT, Audit, Marketing, Teaching …) registered for the workshop. More wanted to join but were not available on that particular date.
First of all, we were lucky to have a very professional, yet fun teacher. Fräntz Miccoli a software developer by training now C.O.O. of Luxembourg startup MyScienceWork had prepared a killer presentation on github. The girls had of course prepared their laptop for the day with XAMPP & Eclipse Php platform.
Needless to say, the atmosphere of the workshop was friendly, supportive and collaborative. Yet the girls were there to make the most of this unique workshop! We had the chance to learn better how the Web works.
I realized that I have been using the Internet for 15 years without really knowing how it worked, as you can see here. It’s fixed now!

On November 30th, Luxembourg will host its second coding class for women.
Organized within the context of EU Code Week, it will offer women the opportunity to learn about web development such as HTML, CSS, and PHP. This initiative aims to remove the myths around coding and encourage women to be more than consumers of IT.
A successful start, women coding hard
This month 12 women from different backgrounds attended the first series of lessons over four evenings at the Impactory, a coworking place for entrepreneurs and changemakers at the heart of Luxembourg City. The teachers introduced them to HTML and CSS, which are the basics of any website.
The next session will be a workshop on web development organized as part of EU CodeWeek on November 30th. The workshop is taught and organized by volunteers. Participants will have the chance to learn the basics of programming with PHP and how to make a small web app that will enable data storage and retrieval.
Geeks rule the world but where are the women?
Coding is the new universal language today. Contrary to common belief, it does not take a computer science degree to program a website. Coding is also fun. Today, the ICT sector is creating job opportunities like no other industry and there will soon be a shortage of skilled workers. Women are also needed in the game!
According to the EU only 30% of the 7 million people working in the information and communication (ICT) sector are women. “My motto, my dream, my bumper sticker is to get every European digital and my ambition is to get more women into ICT,” says Neelie Kroes, Vice President of The European Commission.
EU Code Week Initiative in Luxembourg
The European Commission and local volunteer initiatives are coming together to organize events encouraging more people to take part in ICT and engage in coding. From November 25 to 30 this year, Europe Code Week and smallerscale projects will promote coding thanks to numerous local events.
In Luxembourg, Marina Thiriet, Community & Project Manager at The Impactory and organiser of the first coding classes for women, was asked by Neelie Kroes’ young advisors to be Ambassador for the Grand Duchy.
Coding? Yes, we can!
The event is organized by volunteers eager to improve the place of women in technology and encourage them to take part in ICT and engage in coding.
”I often met women that either wanted to start a business or were managing developers but were lacking technical expertise,” explains Marina Thiriet. “Our initiative will grow to include networking events for women in the ICT sector if we find enough support and sponsors. The whole point is to help women feel more confident with ICT.”

Hedda Pahlson-Moller, a co-founder of the Impactory, is going to run this workshop and tailor it to your needs. In mid-March 123Go Social, Caritas, The Idea Monopoly and The Impactory collaborated to produce a conference on the simple yet important theme: Poverty in Luxembourg – illusion or reality?
Some 60 attendants spent the day exploring this in two main sessions. In the morning a more traditional lecturing format, we heard from Mme Chillon from the Department for Solidarity Economy at the Ministry of Economy, Mme Georges and M. Schmit from Caritas sharing data and real life stories they meet in their work with people in poverty or the risk zone of poverty her in Luxembourg (see the graph below for the details on numbers around poverty in Luxembourg).
The afternoon session set things in motion and changed tempo drastically. First all participants received a crash course in the Business Model Canvas from Sophie Raquez from The Idea Monopoly. This was then used as the framework to pick up the ideas that had been submitted throughout the morning by participants. A quick vote and prioritisation produced seven poverty problems or challenges, that the self-organised groups attacked and tried to find a solution to. It was intense and tough work since it’s not that many who have the experience from looking at entrepreneurial and self-sustainable solutions to solve poverty problems.
Overall the groups did well above their own expectations. The final pitches done by the groups using the the Business Model Canvas as the framework were very inspiring. During this segment there were also some external visitors. Some came as coaches to do speed coaching for the teams participating in the 123GO Social business plan competition which was the last thing that took place before a well deserved evening snack and drinks.

What is the contest about?
We are organizing a start-up contest for university students. Everyone is welcome, from the first bachelor semester to the PhD level. All you need is to have an idea you like and believe in.

- You will be trained in tools of business modeling and planning, for free!
- You will learn how to prepare and present convincing start-up pitches.

How to participate
No worries, we will teach you the tools you need to fully describe and design your start-up.
It will take you between 10 and 30 hours work to get from the idea stage to a business model, depending on your experience.
- Form a team of 1 to up to 3 people
- Apply with a concise and convincing description of your idea (anything between 200 and 1000 words) and the list of team members names and study program. Try to be as clear as possible.
- The process is explained in detail in these slides. Give them a short look.

Kasia, of of our members is launching a new community website about cycling in Luxembourg this April 2013, CycleLuxembourg.lu, and she is looking for writers!
You are invited to a meeting at The Impactory on April 15th and meet others, find out how you can get involved, help brainstorm ideas, or just learn more about the project!
What is it?
A community blog about city cycling and recreational cycling with multiple writers, posting on all types of subjects, targeting all different groups. An all-in-one resource with links to everything to do with cycling in Luxembourg, advice, event calendar of all cycling-related events in the region, plus the organisation of new events! Posts can be written in any language but should also be translated to English.
